Chromebook Security Issues

Teachers and administrators are realizing that allowing students to take their Chromebooks home is creating a whole host of privacy and security related concerns.  Peter Martini, a cyber-security expert, has recommended a few things that parents and teachers can do to keep kids safe while using school-provided devices at home.  Using the ePortal system removes the need for all of them:

  • Make sure anti-malware and anti-phishing technology are enabled across all Chromebooks. This can be accomplished with security solutions which secure these devices in the cloud while students are at home, ensuring security and CIPA compliances are always enforced.
    • ePortal devices automatically route web traffic back through the school’s wireless network, which means that any security or content filtering programs students are protected by at school apply wherever they take their devices off-campus, with no additional configuration or expense required.
  • Enable the feature that requires a password in order to wake the computer after it’s asleep, to avoid an unattended Chromebook being accessed by a non-authorized user when off-campus. This may sound simple, and it’s obviously not foolproof, but it’s the first line of defense that can protect against unauthorized access.
    • ePortals do not download personal information to the hardware so there is nothing to be stolen from the device.  In addition, there are no root menus to change the device’s function and no free-browsing capabilities so unauthorized use (even by an authorized user) is almost impossible due to the design of the system.
  • Make sure only valid extensions are allowed on the Chromebooks by using Google admin tools, to ensure that only extensions from the Google Chrome Store are installed.
    • ePortal gives control over which apps are downloaded to the device to teachers and administrators through the centralized management system, which prevents students from downloading malicious content.
