Every classroom has some variation of the laminated cards that all begin with “The student will be able to…” or “The student can…” Often these standards are written in confusing language that can be hard for students to understand and apply to what they are learning. Sargy Letuchy found this problem compounded by the fact that he teaches ELL students who can already be struggling to keep up with the language used in class on a day to day basis. Inspired by this challenge, he wrote a book The Visual Edge, which shows examples of his visual organizers tied to educational standards. The book is available for purchase, or you can take some of his ideas and apply them to your own standards in your own classroom.
